The road ahead

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

In retrospect it seems obvious to me that starting this blog must have been triggered by a need for change. A spiritual make-over, a moment of reflection (or two). My personal life has been fairly eventful so far and – to me at least – it always felt like it had to be heading somewhere. I’m still trying to figure out the exact destination, but hey, at least we’re moving.

What has changed? For one, there’s less of an urgency to things. There used to be a time when any idea had to happen now and there to have any chance of succes. However, I have noticed over the years that it’s not so much postponing that kills an idea, it’s losing focus of whatever you want to achieve. Only neglect can really kill your dreams. And so, every project, every idea becomes a little baby now, one that must be nurtured until it is ready to face the world on its own.

Next week, I’ll be hosting an exchange with 15 Irish youngsters and we’ll be making movies all week. Now, this project is an idea that I cooked up with an Irish friend of mine (Shane) two years ago on a terras in Turin. I remember him making fun of my totally disaterous love life and ordering far too much expensive wine. I remember the elation we felt at the idea, that this was something we had to do. And here we are.

[Edited: there are some insights on the relational side as well, but perhaps I shouldn't publish those at this point. If you're interested, just give me a call.]

PS: I have in fact started taking notes of the running time of espresso in bars across Belgium and the last one only took 6 seconds! Shocking!
